TESOL/TESOL: CR ITI — Advanced Certificate Program

The TESOL/TESOL CR ITI advanced certificate programs are designed for certified teachers who are seeking additional New York state certification in ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages). The 15-credit programs lead to certification in ESOL, which enables program completers to teach English learners in pre-K to grade 12 settings.

These programs are offered entirely online, with cohorts.

The curriculum for both programs includes educational theories, second language acquisition, language and literacy development and methods and assessment for English language learners in various school settings.

What is TESOL CR ITI?

The Clinically Rich Intensive Teacher Institute (CR ITI) program is an initiative by the New York State of Education (NYSED) to help address the widespread shortage of K-12 English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teachers in NY public schools. To this end, the CR ITI program offers financial support to teachers who are interested in completing the requirements for teaching certification to work with English learners in K-12 environments.

Students in the TESOL CR ITI program complete the same courses as students in the TESOL Advanced Certificate program but are expected to follow the outlined course sequence and complete their courses within a year.

  • What is the CR-ITI program?

    The Clinically Rich Intensive Teacher Institute (CR-ITI) program is an initiative by the New York State of Education (NYSED) to address the widespread shortage of K-12 English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teachers in NY public schools. Binghamton’s CR-ITI program offers financial support to in-service teachers who want to complete the NY certification requirements to work with English learners in K-12 environments. 

  • How many courses and credits are required for this program?

    The CR-ITI is a 15-credit program leading to certification. Five 3-credit courses make up our program. Coursework includes:

    1. EDUCZ 584: Methods & Assessment for English Language Learners (ELLs)
    2. EDUCZ 529: Grammar for English Teachers
    3. EDUCZ 588: Content-Based English as a New Language (ENL) Curriculum & Instruction
    4. EDUCZ 583: Second Language Acquisition
    5. EDUCZ 591: Internship in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
  • What is the format for the courses?

    To accommodate the busy lives of teachers, CR-ITI courses are offered 100% online, in an asynchronous format. Synchronous zoom meetings with professors will also be offered, but no Zoom or classroom meetings are required for participants. 

  • Is there any financial support available?

    Yes! We are currently receiving funding from the state to offset the full cost of tuition for the 5 courses in the CR-ITI program. Participants’ only financial responsibility is the cost of university fees which typically total less than $1,000 for the entire program.*

  • Do I qualify to participate in CR-ITI? 

    Because of this partnership between NYSED and ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ, there are strict requirements to be able to join the CR-ITI program. Participants must demonstrate the
    following:

    1. Completion of initial or professional teaching certification
    2. Full time employment in a school as the teacher of record.
    3. Ample opportunities to work with ELs in your school during the school day
    4. Support of their school district administration, i.e. principal, superintendent, ESOL director
    5. Identification of a tenured ENL teacher to serve as a mentor for the academic year
    6. Completion of twelve credits of foreign language requirement OR the equivalent as shown
      through an approved proficiency assessment, including CLEP or other approved proficiency tests. Talk to your advisor about testing options to be sure they are acceptable.

    Additional foreign language credits are available through coursework at Binghamton University, State University of New York (SUNY) Broome ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ College, , or other accredited college programs. Be sure to have any course approved by your advisor.

Program Requirements

The TESOL/TESOL CR ITI advanced certificate programs are designed for students who already possess initial New York State teacher certification. Students must have at least 12 credits or the equivalent of study of a language other than English. During the program, students complete 15 credit hours of TESOL coursework as well as fieldwork and internship hours.

Students enrolled in teacher preparation programs must earn at least a B- in all courses to progress to subsequent semesters.
