Spring Move-Out Instructions for On-Campus Housing at Binghamton
All ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ residence halls close at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026, and students must vacate their rooms by this time, regardless of their final exam schedule. Graduating seniors attending Commencement on Saturday, May 16, 2026, may remain on campus and must check out by 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
End of Year Schedule:
- Wednesday, May 6: Last day of classes
- Friday, May 8: Final examinations begin
- Friday, May 15: Residence halls close for non-Seniors at 10 a.m.
- Sunday, May 17: Residence halls close for Seniors at 10 a.m.
College Move-Out Checklist
As you prepare to move out, use this checklist to make sure your room is clean, empty, and ready for inspection, and that everything is taken care of before leaving campus. Families and guests are welcome to enter residence halls to assist with packing and moving belongings.
Before you check out:
- Remove all belongings; any leftover items will be thrown away.
- Take everything off the walls.
- Clean your room and take all trash to the dumpster.
- Move all furniture 1 foot away from the walls.
Before you depart campus:
- Forward all mail to your summer address. A forwarding address card can be completed at the Mail Services Office.
- Deposit all dishes and silverware belonging to the Dining Hall in the appropriate bin.
- Return all library books.
- Close and lock your windows, and lower your blinds when leaving.
- Remember to return your building keys (if applicable). Students who do not return their keys prior to departure will be billed.
- If you rented your mini-fridge/microwave from , please leave them in your room. MyMicrofridge directly retrieves these units from student rooms after halls close.
- If you have any questions about the move-out process, please speak with your Residence Director or contact your community’s Area Office.
Room Check-Out Process Options
¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ Residential Life offers two options for students checking out of their residence halls in the spring: Express and In-Person. Although Express Check-Out is most common, please pick the one that is best for you.
Express Check-Out
If you select Express Check-Out, please refer to the instructions below pertaining to your residence hall:
Students checking out of Hinman, Mountainview, College in the Woods, Apartments, and Old Digman/Old Rafuse:
- Fill out the Express Check-Out Envelope. Express Check-Out Envelopes are available at the Student Staff Office in your building. Using a pen, fill out the form on the front and keep the yellow copy for yourself.
- Place your keys inside the envelope (if applicable) and seal it.
- Drop off your sealed Express Check-Out Envelope at the Student Staff Office or the drop box in your building.
- Do not hand in your BU ID, keep it for next year.
- Staff will assess damages in your room after your departure.
- If you do not return your keys prior to your departure, you will be billed.
Students checking out of Newing and New Dickinson:
- Scan the Check-Out QR Code posted on the Housing Portal and in your building.
- Complete the check-out form to notify staff of your departure.
- Do not hand in your BU ID. Keep it for next year.
- Staff will assess damages in your room after your departure.
In-Person Check-Out
If you are unable to do an Express Check-Out for any reason, you may select In-Person Check-Out and follow the instructions below:
- Sign up for an In-Person Check-Out Time Slot found on your Housing Portal.
- Based on staff availability, you will meet with a Residential Life staff member to conduct an in-person room walk-through to assess damages while you are present.
In-Person Check-Out will not be available past Thursday, May 14, 2026.
Billing for Room Damages
Be aware that Residential Life staff members will assess room damages in student rooms after your departure. The cost associated with the assessed damage has been predetermined in consultation with the ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ Department of Facilities Management. Charges for excessive cleaning, removal of personal property, and loss or damage caused by residents are billed directly to the resident responsible. In the event that two or more residents occupy the same room, suite, flat, apartment, or shared bathroom, and it cannot be determined who is responsible for the damage, the assessment will be billed equally.
Check your account at regularly throughout the summer (even if you are not returning to Binghamton) as damage assessment and other charges may be billed to your account. Please contact your ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµâ€™s Area Office if you have any questions.
Security and Safety during Check-Out
Be especially alert during this time and do not leave your personal belongings unattended. Keep your doors locked and items secured, even during the move-out process. Be mindful not to leave personal belongings you want to keep near donation locations in your ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ; unattended items left near these spaces may be mistaken for donations and taken away.
Parents and family members may enter residence halls during the move-out process to assist students. Students must be present with their guests at all times.

Drop off at a bin: From May 4-18, there will be bins located at the following locations:
- C4 Multipurpose Room
- CIW Iroquois Commons
- Appalachian Dining Hall
- Hinman Dining Hall
- Hillside Commons
- Susquehanna Coffee House (Brandywine)
Drop off at a tent: From May 13-15, there will be tents on campus from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Students can bring their items to one of these tents to donate! There will be a tent at the following locations:
- Outside of CIW dining hall
- Outside of Hinman dining hall
- In front of Windham
- Dickinson quad
- Newing College between Delaware, Endicott, & Broome halls
