Paid Time Off - Student Sick:
The Research Foundation (RF) is implementing a new Paid Time Off Sick Plan for all student employees effective September 7, 2026. Due to this new RF requirement, all Research Project Assistants (RPAs) will now be required to complete monthly exception reports. Principal Investigators (PIs) will be responsible for reviewing and approving these monthly exception reports monthly.
Note: hourly undergraduate/graduate employees will continue to submit their biweekly timecards for approval by the PI as usual.
PTO Student Sick may be used to provide income when student employees are absent from work for the following reasons:
- for an employee’s mental or physical illness, injury or health condition,
- for preventative care,
- and to care for a family member.
Sick time may also be used for issues related to domestic violence or family offense. For more information, please see PTO Student Sick section of the .
Student employees are eligible to accrue sick time according to the and may carry over unused balances from year to year. You can view your staff accrual balances in under: Accrual Balances, as outlined in the .

As we head into the busy summer months, The Research Foundation Office of Human Resources
(RFHR) is sharing important information to help with your hiring needs, summer salary
decisions, and to communicate other general process improvements.
To aid hiring managers in staffing their programs, RFHR held an information session
via Zoom on Friday, April 4th from 12 PM to 1 PM (see below for a recording of this
session as well as the slidedeck). During this session, RFHR staff presented on how
to employ and pay summer employees and key things to consider when appointing employees.
RFHR distributed - a quick reference guide to commonly asked questions for summer employment with
the RF. This guide is also posted below to assist supervisors.
