8 Tips for Surviving Finals Season

Finding effective ways to study and stay sane during finals is crucial. Whether you need a change in study methods or tips to stay motivated, we’ve got you covered! With my fifth finals season approaching, here are eight of my favorite tips that will make your studying more beneficial!

Reserve a Study Room

Having a productive space is important, and your dorm might not be the best option. It’s no secret that the library gets crowded around finals, so plan ahead and book a study room. There are group study rooms and study spaces in Bartle Library, Science Library, and the University Downtown Center. You can reserve these online for up to four hours at a time!

Find Effective Study Methods

Having a study method that works can make a big difference. If you find yourself studying for hours at a time and feeling like you haven’t learned anything, it might be time to change it up. For me, active recall is the most effective. Instead of just rereading information, having your brain retrieve it helps to mimic a testing format. You can use platforms such as Quizlet, but I believe flashcards are the most effective. Check out some more study skills to see what works best for you!

Let Yourself Take Breaks

Academic burnout is real. After a full semester of coursework, staying focused for long periods can be tough. Allow yourself to take breaks throughout long study sessions. Taking a walk around campus in the Nature Preserve or hanging out with friends can boost your mood and help clear your mind before studying again. Plan Out Your Studying

In my opinion, time management is a key factor for academic success. Utilizing to-do lists or creating a study schedule can help you cover all the necessary material. Concentrating on certain portions of the material helps to streamline studying because you know what needs to be done and when. Stay Well Rested

Along with finals season comes stress, which impacts your body physically and mentally. According to the , college students should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. With a proper sleep schedule, you will be able to concentrate and retain information better. This can help not only to relieve stress but also make your studying more effective. Use Music to Stay Focused

Did you know certain music can help your brain process different information? According to , instrumental tracks like lo‑fi beats can set a good rhythm when working on essays. When memorizing formulas or vocabulary, upbeat playlists with rhythm and repetition can improve recall. Research from also shows that listening to music can enhance your studying; they found that brain activity peaks during pauses between song switches.

De-Stress at Campus Events

If you feel overwhelmed, check out the . Throughout the semester and into finals week, events are offered to help students de-stress. From complimentary chair massages at the East Gym to hot cocoa bars in the MarketPlace, there are many activities available to help you combat stress.
