- A brief cover letter that includes the applicant’s contact information and mandated tenure decision date. The letter should explain how the applicant will present and/or publish the proposed research. Additionally, the letter should identify the Principal Investigator (if applicable), including the PI’s title and institutional affiliation; for multiple investigator projects, the letter should state who should receive the grant. The cover letter must be completed and submitted with the application.

If the project lasts more than one year, the budget should be broken into year-by-year expenses. Also state what research funding (if any) is currently available to the applicant (e.g., start-up funds), as well as funds for which the applicant has applied (including estimated notification date and anticipated start date if successful).
- Project description (2,000-word maximum), consisting of a statement of research objectives and research questions being addressed and including, where relevant, citations from the literature, an overview of methodology and an account of what original contribution (theoretical or practical) the research will make.
- Letter from department chair or senior faculty mentor that must provide some assessment of how this research would support the individual’s case for tenure and promotion. If the applicant requests a course release, the department must provide approval.
Applications should be submitted electronically at dei@binghamton.edu as a Word or PDF document attachment.
