MPH Degree Requirements

The Master of Public Health degree requires 48 credits of graduate-level coursework. It offers a generalist master’s program with elective course sequences in areas such as population health, global health, disaster management and forensic health. A Harpur-MPH 4+1 program is also offered.

  • Two foundational courses are required:
    • Foundations of public health
    • Public health biology
  • Five core courses are required:
    • Social and behavioral sciences in public health
    • Biostatistics
    • Environmental health
    • Epidemiology
    • Health policy, finance and management
  • Three additional courses are also required:
    • Applied epidemiology, which uses a case-based approach to integrate all core disciplines
    • Program planning and evaluation, which develops assessment skills for informed decision-making
    • Special topics in public health, which explores current and emerging public health issues
  • Four experiential public health courses are also required. These 1-credit courses focus on community engagement, professional development and interprofessional education. They are designed to foster leadership skills and socialization into the role of public health professional.

  • Three elective courses in areas such as population health or global health or  certificate-bearing elective sequences in disaster management or forensic health

  • Students must complete an internship practicum and capstone project to meet degree requirements.
